Artistry Unleashed

In my practice, I’m always looking for ways to keep things fresh and a little unexpected. I love it when a piece encourages people to pause and get lost in those in-between moments—where things aren’t totally clear and there’s room for a bit of curiosity. Light plays a big role for me; it has this great way of shifting the mood and bringing out new patterns or textures that you might miss at first glance.

I’m not interested in spelling everything out for the viewer. Instead, I want my work to feel like an open invitation—a space where imagination can wander and different stories can take shape. There’s a balance of movement and quiet, detail and openness, that I hope sparks a sense of discovery and offers a little escape from the everyday.

Artistic Journey

My creative process is a dance between intuition and curiosity—a response to both my emotions and the ever-shifting world around me. I’m drawn to vibrant and shadowed surfaces alike, blending reality with abstract imagination to craft textured, layered works that shimmer with possibility. It’s often the subtle, overlooked details that capture my attention—the glint of light on a forgotten corner, or the quiet poetry in a weathered wall—inviting a sense of wonder and play.

Each piece begins as an exploration, a gentle wandering through materials and ideas. Whether I’m combining cyanotype techniques with acrylics or embracing indirect painting methods, I welcome the unexpected: happy accidents, mysterious marks, and the delightful surprises that emerge when I let go of control. The result is a surface both tactile and visually dynamic, drawing viewers into a world where boundaries blur and stories unfold in whispers.

I strive to balance defined focal points with areas of ambiguity, encouraging viewers to interpret, imagine, and feel their way through the work. This interplay between clarity and mystery is intentional—a space for personal connection, reflection, and perhaps a touch of whimsy. My art isn’t just about what’s seen at first glance; it’s about the hidden narratives and sensations that reveal themselves upon closer inspection.

Ultimately, each piece is an invitation to pause, explore, and rediscover the magic woven into the everyday—a reminder that wonder is always waiting, just beneath the surface.

Photographic Journey

My approach to photography is rooted in the simple act of wandering—letting my feet, the environment, and my intuition shape what I see and capture. Inspired by artists like Saul Leiter, I’m drawn to the interplay of light, texture, and shape, always searching for those fleeting moments where the ordinary transforms into something quietly extraordinary. As Leiter once said, “I happen to believe in the beauty of simple things. I believe that the most uninteresting thing can be beautiful.”

Whether I’m navigating city streets, open landscapes, or architectural forms, my work is less about documenting a place and more about evoking a mood—inviting viewers to feel the subtle stories and atmospheres hidden in plain sight. Through abstraction and unexpected perspectives, I aim to create images that are a bit mysterious, sometimes dreamlike, and always open to interpretation.

Ultimately, each photograph is an invitation to join me in the act of noticing: to pause, wander, and discover the poetry woven into the everyday.

Jim Neuner's artwork beautifully blends realism and abstraction, captivating viewers with its vibrant textures and imaginative narratives.

About me...

Based on a barrier island along Florida’s Atlantic coast, I share a life of travel and exploration with my wonderful wife. Our ongoing adventures continually broaden my perspective and enrich the subjects I choose to paint. Whether journeying near or far, I bring a sketchbook and camera to capture the essence of new places—visual notes that often inspire my studio work.

Themes of water, sea, and sky are central to my work, explored through acrylic, watercolor, oil, and digital photography. My work draws on the influence of artists such as Eric Ward, J.M.W. Turner, and Edward Seago, as well as the vibrant global coastal artist community. The immediacy of plein air painting—working quickly to capture fleeting light—has honed my observational skills and deepened my appreciation for the subtleties of the coastal landscape. I am drawn to the quiet drama at the edge of land and sea, inviting viewers to bring their own stories and emotions to each piece.

My abstract paintings are informed by a diverse artistic lineage: the richly textured surfaces of Anselm Kiefer, the organic rhythms of Arthur Dove, and the poetic interplay of color and line in Paul Klee’s work. Inspiration also comes from Georgia O’Keeffe’s early abstractions and the contemplative mood of Caspar David Friedrich. Through contemplative gestural marks, and subtle variation, I aim to evoke the emotional resonance and quiet wonder present in both nature and pure abstraction.

Exhibitions at The Artist’s Workshop in New Smyrna Beach and TaDa Gallery have featured my work, which has been recognized for its atmospheric qualities. My photographs have appeared in Smoky Blue Literary and Arts Magazine, reflecting my ongoing commitment to sharing the beauty and complexity of coastal environments.

Biography

Jim Neuner is a Florida-based multidisciplinary visual artist working in acrylic, watercolor, oil, and digital photography, best known for evocative coastal landscapes and explorations of light and atmosphere. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, and shaped by formative years in Raleigh, North Carolina, Jim draws lasting inspiration from the Outer Banks and the mountains of Asheville—landscapes that continue to inform his creative vision.

From a very young age, Jim was captivated by the spirit of exploration. Jacques Cousteau’s documentaries sparked his fascination with the ocean and the idea of discovery, even before he had seen the sea himself. That changed as an older child, when he first set eyes on the Atlantic in the Outer Banks. The smell of salt air, endless horizon, the cry of gulls overhead, and rolling surf left an indelible mark, inspiring a lifelong love of coastal landscapes and the sense of wonder that comes from encountering the unknown. As Cousteau so eloquently said, “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

Early artistic influences include the whimsical worlds of Richard Scarry, Margret Rey, and Beatrix Potter, whose imaginative storytelling and attentive observation of everyday life sparked Jim’s fascination with narrative and the expressive possibilities of art. Like Potter, he strives to balance keen observation with a sense of wonder, drawing inspiration from the beauty and character of animals, plants, and landscapes.

Largely self-taught, Jim has refined his practice through workshops and ongoing study. He is a member of The Artist’s Workshop in New Smyrna Beach. His work is represented by TaDa Gallery and is valued by collectors for its atmosphere and strong sense of place. Jim is an associate member of the American Impressionist Society and serves as Photography and Art Editor for Smoky Blue Literary and Arts Magazine. As a gallery owner, he is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, supportive art community and encourages artists to present their work with the highest standards of professionalism and care.

Currently, Jim is enjoying continuing his studio practice and exploring ink and wash.

When painting outdoors or taking photographs I always try to follow this simple principle:
“When you’re out looking for something to paint, don’t forget to glance over your shoulder—sometimes the best inspiration is hiding right behind you, just waiting to be noticed.” ~ Jim Neuner

Through his work, Jim aims to inspire viewers to pause, reflect, and find their own sense of wonder in the quiet beauty of the coastline.
